National Wine Day

#nationalwineday
May 25th is National Wine Day!  Not to be confused with National Drink Wine Day, celebrated on February 18th. What!?  You mean we have two days set aside every year to drink wine?!  Isn’t every day Wine Day?  Today is a day to sit down and enjoy a glass of wine (or two), possibly one you’ve never tried before.

Here are a few to try:

2014 Simi Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

2014 Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

La Posta Pizzela 2014 Malbec

While enjoying a glass this evening, here are a few things to ponder…

The Wine Institute reports that in 2015, Americans drank 915 Million gallons of Wine. That’s a lot of wine!  Picture this; one acre of grapevines produces 797 gallons of wine or 15, 940 5oz. glasses of wine.

Red wines should be served in a wide glass to support oxidation; this will help to better showcase the flavors. White wines can be overwhelmed by oxidation so serve in a taller, thinner glass.

Pairing wine often makes for a more pleasurable dining experience. The general rule of thumb is to serve white wines with fish, poultry and vegetables.  Red wines pair well with red meat and pork.  And, it doesn’t have to be fancy!  Try my BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches. Sparkling wines serve well as an after dinner drink, or of course, pair well with any celebration.  Perhaps a celebratory glass of bubbly is in order for National Wine Day!

To sound like you’re a seasoned sommelier, here are just a few ways to describe wine:

Whether you uncork a refreshing glass of bubbly, a chilled white or a bold red, take time to sit with family and friends tonight and enjoy! Share how you celebrate using #nationalwineday.  Let me know what wines you like, I’d love to try something new!

Until next time, cheers!
